Picture Framing Tips

The frame and matting should never draw more attention to itself then to the artwork. It is there to enhance and protect the artwork and not to stand out on its own.

Glass selection is very important. If you are trying to preserve anything that is worth monetary or sentimental value, using a UV-coated glass is very important. It is more expensive than clear glass, but it will protect your print from a majority of harmful UV rays that fade your print.

When choosing mat boards there are a lot of things to consider, bu first and foremost to consider is the art work it will surround. The board should never over-power the displayed print. The best choice is a mat board where the color intensity is less than the subject and is closer to neutral.

While it is not necessary to use a mat board when framing, it will help prevent moisture. The mat board separates the photograph from the glass surface, creating an air gap.

Always make sure you are purchasing acid-free mat boards for your framing. These mats may cost a little more, but it will keep the mat from discoloring your print.

It's always best to have a professional frame your prints. They have the knowledge to recommend the best preservation methods for your piece. They also have specialty tools and equipment that you would not have available at home.

Anything can be framed! Flat paintings and photographs are not the only things that can be framed. Through the use of shadow boxes and deep molding, things such as signed baseballs, sports jerseys, rare jewelry, and so much more can be framed. Take whatever you have to you local frame shop and ask them what they can do.

Once the framed artwork is at home, it is best it is hung in an area that is not in direct sunlight or bright light. It should also not be next to a heater or fireplace.

Take the time to frame your artwork right the first time. Look at all the matting and framing options possible before you finally decide on something. It's never fun to run into something and then not love it once you've finished it.

When hanging your frame, it is very important to have the right hardware to keep it secure. For larger frames that weigh up to 25-30 lbs, you should use a stainless steel wire to hang the frame. The wire is attached to the frame and then hung from the wall using proper hanging hardware. If the frame is heavier, the most secure option is to use hanger hardware on both the left and right sides so that the weight is balanced as it hangs.
