Select a bat that is suited to you. Bats come in varying lengths and weights. They are also made from different materials. Find one that feels comfortable when swinging. If you have to use too much force to swing, then you should select a lighter bat and visa versa. Being comfortable with your bat is the first step in becoming a great hitter.

Learn the strike zone. Avoid hitting bad pitches that are too high or low in the strike zone. Don't be overly aggressive. Focus on hitting the ball to put it into play. Keep your eye on the ball.

Look at the spot where the ball is going to leave the pitchers hand. Don't make the folly of looking at the pitchers eyes, that's not where the pitch will be coming from. One way to practice this is to take batting practice without swinging. Just watch the balls as they leave the pitchers hand to the catcher's glove. Try to see if you can tell which pitch is coming and where it is going. This will help you develop your pitch recognition skills.
