Make sure that you are using proper posture and sitting upright when you are at the keyboard. Keep your feet flat on the floor and do not have them dangling.

When you are first learning to type, focus first on making sure you are using the proper keystrokes, even if it doesn't feel right to you. Strive for accuracy first and the speed will come later.

Do not bang on the keyboard, and use crisp but light force. Your fingers will move faster this way.

While speed is always good when typing, don't force yourself to go faster than you are able. The faster you force yourself to go, the more likely you are to make mistakes.

If your keyboard is equipped with folding "feet," try to keep them flat so that your wrists remain flat against the keyboard and not arched.

As with anything else that you may practice (such as a musical instrument), it is best to have a set time to practice and to keep a schedule. You will be more likely to become better at typing by sitting down and practicing three times a week for thirty minutes than you will if you practice for several hours at one time and then not return to the keyboard afterwards.

Once you have become more comfortable with using the proper keystrokes, try to type without constantly looking at the keyboard. Not having to look at the keyboard will help increase your typing speed and accuracy immensely. Your fingers should know where to go on their own!

When using the space bar, try only using one thumb to hit it instead of two. If you are right-handed, you will probably use your right thumb. If you are left-handed, you will probably use your left thumb.

If you are using the Shift key (either to type a symbol or to capitalize a word), try to use the opposite hand you are using than of the hand that is hitting the other key (i.e. if you are capitalizing the letter "Y," you would shift with the LEFT SHIFT, if you are capitalizing the letter "T," you would capitalize with the RIGHT SHIFT).

Look online for various typing tests to see how many words per minute (wpm) you can do.
